Reflection on Social Media Case 7: Anthony Weiner's Post

Honesty is always the best policy! In Anthony Weiner's case being honest could have saved his career. Not only does social media have way more power than we give it credit for society is even more set on finding out the truth than it ever has been before. Since we now have the power we want to use it and discover what is truth and what is not. It blows my mind that individuals think they can get away with dishonesty. They never do, at some point it will all come out and the consequences are always worse. I remember as a kid the times I did something wrong and lied about it I always got in way more trouble than if I had just admitted it when I did something wrong. It's the same concept. This  article shares a lighthearted story of a girl who lied her way into a date with a boy she really liked, and couldn't quite get out of the lie. Obviously this is a much more lighthearted version of what lies can do to a person but the sentiment is all the same. If this young women had come clean the day of the date instead of continuing to fabricate her past the ending to this story could have been a much happier one. This article going into more of the psychological reasons for why we lie. It was super interesting. The article explained how lying is actually a deeply rooted survival technique. We lie to maintain the security of our lives. It's fascinating that what we do to protect ourselves in so many cases is actually the cause of our misfortune. Going back to Anthony Weiner's case of course he thought he had to do whatever it takes to keep the truth of his actions from getting out, however if he had just told the truth he would have been so much better off. He probably would have still lost his career but he could have maintain a shred of respect for himself, that was altogether lost because of his lies.

  2. Very good post! Also, those links that you used are very interesting! It was interesting to compare this story to a more lighthearted story so we could see the effects of lying in another situation. The psychology of lying was also very interesting to read about.
