New Technologies

Fake news isn't a new phenomenon likewise CGI isn't new technology however as CGI develops and begins to seem almost like a new technology with what it is capable of fake new has the capacity to become more and more prevalent in society. In class we discussed the case of Tom Petty's "death" and death. Fake news is what made so many people believe Tom Petty was dead but how much worse would it have been if there could have been CGI photographs that looked so life like they couldn't be distinguished from? This article explains just how big of a deal the developing capacity of CGI could be on the creating and spreading of fake news. It discussed how with the death of Carrie Fisher before the new Star wars movie came out many fans were devastated and wondered how they would finish the movie. However the CGI was so spectacular audience members couldn't tell the difference. When I went to see the movie I honestly thought they had finished filming the movie before she passed away because I thought there was no way that couldn't be her. This technology will make it possible for people to create images that look so life like it will be almost impossible to tell. With that kind of power discerning between truth and falsehood will get much harder than it already is! Not only can photographs be produced but actual videos! Videos could be produced of individuals saying things and doing things that they actually didn't do with almost perfection! It's crazy to think about what steps are going to have to be made to protect individuals from this kind of misrepresentation. That is something that always fascinates me about technology and social media. Laws are in place today that we wouldn't of even dreamed about as a society ten years ago! That ten years in the future there will be so many more! This article lists ten different technologies that have resulted in the creation and changes in law. It's always crazy to realize just how far our world has come and how much its going to continue changing! Fake news is already such a large issue there is no doubt however that it can become even worse! With the developing of CGI technology it will become more and more difficult for individuals to desipher between what is true and what is not!
