Reflection on Social Media Case 6: Basketball Cop

I loved reading about this case, it was such a refreshing story compared to so much of the negativity that we see so much of in our society. While this was such an uplifting sweet story the lessons, it teaches relates so wonderfully to the things we’ve been learning about in class. The first part of the story is so sweet without social media however that would be the story. The cop would have built a good relationship with those boys and taken steps with those specific boys to lessen the fear of cops in his community. However, that isn’t the whole story, because social media took a hold of this story and shared it Shaquille O'Neal got ahold of the story and took the sweet story to a whole new level. This story displays just how much of an impact social media can have. It creates the opportunity for information to be shared with people all over the world. I think it’s so easy for us to get caught up in the negativity of social media but stories like this remind me

Online Reputation

For my Online Reputation assignment I have been looking into Erin Swearingen. The first step I took was to simply type her name into googles search engine. The first thing that popped up was her Facebook page. Erin's cover page was a photo of her with a six other girls all wearing formal dresses. This was the first clue to me that she was in a sorority. There aren't very many opportunities to wear pretty formal dresses here in Logan besides Greek parties. It was also a tip off that all the girls with her seemed to be around the same age and really close. This suspicion became even more concrete as I scrolled down her Facebook page a little further and found a post about supporting her Kappa Delta Chapter. The post was encouraging Erin's followers to purchase their spring shamrock T shirt on this website with the proceeds going towards helping end the cycle of child abuse. This showed me that Erin obviously has a special place in her heart for service and helping out

Reflection on Social Media Case 5: Paypal Deleted Comments

I found this case study to be very interesting. It makes sense why a business like Paypal would deem it necessary to delete negative comments. It seems like the logical thing to do. It doesn't seem to be that far fetched that if negativity about your company is being shared the answer is to simply get rid of it. However it is no surprise to me that the public received this with outrage. Social media has enacted in many individuals today the sense that we have a complete freedom and right to express our thoughts and ideas without any opposition. Facebook is a breeding ground to the sharing of opinions. This article explains just how easy social media has made sharing opinions and complaints. Due to this new found belief the idea that a company could swoop in and delete a comment without any explanation or response would be infuriating for many individuals. I work at a local boutique called ROOLEE. The majority of our marketing is done through social media and from time to time we&#

Reflection on Social Media Case 4: Nestle's "Funner Menu Options"

There is a lot that can be learned from Nestle's funner menu options campaign. All it took was adding some new different options to their phone menu to excite people enough to spread the word like wildfire. It didn't require much at all from Nestle but the benefits were exponential! This example displays just how powerful social media really is. Without social media there is no way the nestle funner menu options would have received as much attention as they did. As we discussed last week the power of viral plays a huge role in the success of businesses. That's why there is such a push for effective social media marketing. Companies need to find ways to interact with the public and excite them, if they want to stand out. https://www.impactbnd.com/blog/social-media-marketing-the-importance-of-a-two-way-conversation We are so bombarded with adds and images it's hard for companies to compete. In order for companies to compete they have to find a way to grab the attentio

Reflection on Social Media Case 3: Tom Petty's "Death" and Death

The case of Tom Petty’s “death” and death reflects one of biggest issues I see with social media. There is no way of monitoring posts. People can get on and say whatever they want, making it difficult to distinguish between truth and falsehood. This can be seen as a blessing an in many ways it is. The ability to share opinions freely and without fear is something that we as the American people should be very grateful for! However, with this freedom comes some very serious problems. It’s now incredible difficult to find liable resources. I have found myself on a few different occasions read something on Facebook or see it on Pinterest and later in a conversation get into a heated debate with that person when they oppose the information I saw online. I realize completely how silly this is! I’m supporting something I really don’t have the facts to support, but that’s what social media can do to us. When we see something enough times we begin to believe it’s true. Jacob Groseck discusses
